A Legacy in Every Lesson: The Story of Saied Music

The story of Saied Music begins with a drum set, a trumpet, and a dream.

In 1946, James G. Saied, a passionate musician, former band director, and WWII veteran, returned home to Tulsa with a vision: to make music accessible to every child. With just a few instruments and the support of family and friends, he opened the first Saied Music store in downtown Tulsa. His mission wasn’t just to sell instruments—it was to enrich lives through music education.

James believed in the life-changing power of music. He once said, “Music can give so much to a person’s life. We ought to give music to every child.” That belief has been the heartbeat of Saied Music for nearly 80 years.

From One Band Director to a Family of Music Advocates

What James Saied began in 1946 didn’t stop with him—it became a family legacy. His son, Bob Saied, inherited more than just a business; he inherited his father’s commitment to music and community. Bob helped expand Saied Music across Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas, while continuing to support school programs and advocate for music education.

Following in their footsteps is Kim Koch, James Saied’s granddaughter. With her leadership, Saied Music continues to evolve while staying true to its founding mission. Kim brings a modern sensibility to the business, overseeing the company’s commitment to quality instruction, student-centered service, and deep community involvement. Her work ensures that the values James Saied held dear continue to guide every lesson taught and every instrument placed in a student’s hands.

Today, three generations of the Saied family have carried the torch, growing the company from a single store into one of the region’s leading full-service music dealers and lesson providers. Yet the heart of it all remains the same: teaching music, changing lives.

Music Lessons Rooted in Legacy

At Saied Music Studios, the spirit of James Saied is present in every music lesson. Our studios are more than classrooms—they are part of a tradition that spans nearly eight decades of music advocacy.

Students of all ages can take private lessons in voice, piano, guitar, violin, saxophone, drums, and more. Our teachers are passionate, experienced, and committed to helping each student grow at their own pace. Whether it’s a child picking up their first instrument, a teen preparing for an audition, or an adult returning to music after years away, our studios offer a welcoming, supportive environment.

We believe—just like James did—that music should be for everyone. That’s why our lesson program is:

  • Contract-free and month-to-month, giving families the flexibility they need.

  • Backed by rental and purchase options from our in-house retail team.

  • Supported by incredible customer service

  • Enhanced with performance opportunities at our South Tulsa recital hall.

A March, a Mission, and a Movement

James Saied’s passion didn’t stop at music education. He was a devoted fan of John Philip Sousa and was instrumental in the successful effort to make “The Stars and Stripes Forever” the official National March of the United States. His advocacy, alongside NAMM President Ziggy Coyle, culminated in President Ronald Reagan signing it into law in 1987—just one more example of how deeply Saied believed in the role of music in American life.

That same belief is what drives Saied Music Studios today.

Carrying the Melody Forward

From a storefront in 1946 to multiple locations across the region today, the story of Saied Music is the story of one family’s devotion to music—and the thousands of students whose lives have been shaped by it.

Whether you’re new to music or continuing a lifelong journey, there’s a place for you here. Because at Saied Music Studios, every note you play is part of a bigger legacy—one that began with James Saied, lives on through Bob and Kim, and continues with every student who walks through our doors.
